Hard Start Kit: Does your compressor need it?
A hard start kit is essentially a capacitor that stores electricity. When the compressor is turned on, a switch in the hard start system allows this stored electricity to be used at startup for 2-3 seconds and then switch off, giving an extra boost of electricity to the motor when it is hard to start. Installing a hard start is relatively inexpensive and may help if your compressor is at the end of its life. However, there are a few questions to address before you think this is the next best thing to sliced bread.
First, is your compressor under warranty and for how long? If your compressor is under warranty, you will most likely want to file a warranty claim for replacement before it expires. Installing a hard start kit may prolong the life of an ailing compressor, but check your warranty options first.
Second, a quality new compressor should not need a hard start kit. If you are having issues with a new compressor, there are probably other issues with the HVAC system that shouldn’t be ignored. Consider giving Pebble Creek AC a call, and we can schedule an appointment to check out your entire HVAC system.
Third, be wary of HVAC technicians that “up-sell” to increase their commission. Get a second opinion if you can. At Pebble Creek AC, our technicians will give you a detailed overview of your AC or furnace during your annual Clean-n-Check and present you with viable options for improving the efficiency of your system.
